Alexis and Lillian Travel the World: Riverside Edition

Dawn over at Mom-A-Logues has the coolest thing going on and we got to be a part of it for the past week.  Her daughters "flat me's" are traveling around the world, visiting one family at a time in hopes to see how many different places they can visit in one year.

The girls arrived in the middle of Homecoming week at school, so they were greeted with a lengthy stay at Arlington High School.  They experienced ninth grade language arts and read Edgar Allen Poe's "Cask of Amontillado" with my classes, along with many hours of event prep for the pep rally, football game, and dance.

That part wasn't very interesting, so we took the girls on a tour of Riverside!

It's October which means fall weather, apple season and pumpkin picking (who cares that it is 95-105 degrees outside), so our family make the short drive to the Oak Glen Apple farms.
The Winesap apples were ready for picking, so after stopping at Riley's Apple Farm we had a short apple picking lesson.  Andrew enjoyed picking apples for everyone.
We enjoyed an apple together after picking them fresh (dirt and all).
We enjoyed the farm life too.  The girls took a trip on the wooden wagon!
After Oak Glen, we visited some of the most important Riverside locations.

Our first stop was to the California's Citrus State Park
The City of Riverside can thank the naval orange for its origins (those green things are oranges in the process of growing--they have a few more months to go).
In 1873, the U.S. Department of Agriculture forever changed the history of Southern California when it sent two small navel orange trees to Riverside resident Eliza Tibbets. Those trees, growing in near perfect soil and weather conditions, produced an especially sweet and flavorful fruit. Word of this far superior orange quickly spread, and a great agricultural industry was born. An effort to promote citrus ranching in the state brought would-be citrus ranch barons flocking to California. The second "gold rush" was on and Riverside was born.

Next up was the palm tree and rose lined Victoria Ave.

As I was thinking about where to introduce the girls to this street came to mind quickly because of its beauty.  The palm trees here can be see all over the city (including one in our own back yard.

VICTORIA AVENUE owes its existence to the vision of Mathew Gage, a jeweler from Ireland who moved to Riverside in 1881. He developed the Gage Canal which brought precious water to the citrus groves in Arlington Heights. His vision introduced the many varieties trees and plants along Victoria Avenue.
During the spring of 1892, the grading of Victoria Avenue began and the first trees were planted. Riverside’s pioneer landscape designer, Franz Hosp, was responsible for the master plan—a masterpiece of roadway design which proved to be almost as appropriate for automobiles as it was for the horse and buggy crowd.

Next stop: California Baptist University, my alma mater.

Riverside has been named Most Intelligent Community two years in a row and part of that is because of the city's multiple universities.  In addition to CBU, Riverside is home to University of California, Riverside, La Sierra University, and Riverside Community College.

Our last stop of the grand Riverside tour was the Historic Mission Inn.

The Mission Inn’s rise to greatness began in the late 1800’s, when wealthy easterners and Europeans flocked to Riverside in search of both a warmer winter climate and to invest in the area’s profitable citrus industry.  By the 1890’s, Riverside was the richest city per capita in the United States. The consistent influx of tourists to Riverside made Frank Miller, the Master of the Inn, recognize the dire need for a grand resort hotel and the Mission Inn was born.
On our way in we talked (literally, they said 'hello' and 'good boy' to us) with the macaws, Frank Miller's favorite things.  Inside the main lobby, Andrew took the girls to President Taft's chair (1909).
We showed off several of the beautiful courtyards and tall cathedrals--although it was more fun to look down and yell at the people trying to relax at dinner time (we didn't stay long).

Of course, they've also spent time at home with mom, dad, Andrew, and Reese (the dog).

On a silly side note: Andrew loves Lillian's flat-me; he's become quite attached and is sad to see them move on to another city.

18 months old

Now this one is actually kind of shocking to me; it's hard to believe that my itty bitty baby is already a year and a half.  It's even harder to believe that I'll have a two year old in six months!  I feel like it was yesterday that it was his first birthday party and not that too long ago that he was just a tiny baby. As an eighteen month old, we're fully into toddlerhood.
Andrew and Miss Simone at school on Back to School Night
New Developmental Milestones this Month: Here are the new developmental things that he started doing this month:
  • Physical: He is a strong, very physically little boy.  He is a massive dancer and is trying to trying hard to jump.  Working on using utensils, he enjoys stabbing items, but usually gives up and goes back to his fingers.  Pushes and pulls large objects (like  his highchair, the side tables, his small chair, etc) around the living room.
    • Teeth: no new teeth this month--sitting happily at 12 teeth.
  • Cognitive/Language: very into stacking objects onto other objects (some that are meant to be stacked, some that aren't), indicating wants with words (yes/no) and with head nods, throws temper tantrums whenever he doesn't get what he wants, points to most body parts on himself, mommy, and stuffed Mickey, constantly claims things as "mine" and pulls it away.
Stacking his ducks on top of his barn (and the mess he likes to make).

    • Vocabulary/Words: We have 35 words in our vocabulary, adding hat, toes, mine
    • Old words are Mama, Dada, Dog, Duck, more, hi, no, byebye, ball, bunny (bun), banana, bird, tree, diaper (die), milk, night-night (ni-ni), Reese (eese), shoes, me, pretty, ears, eyes, kitty, turtle, book, hot, cold, three, Des, Grandma.
  • Psychosocial: wary of strangers (finally), beginning to role play, enjoys "family hugs," gives kisses with a closed mouth, gets very excited when he sees familar people, temper tantrums galore.
Physical Growth this Month/Doctors:  several small trips for ear infections, we've gained and lost weight this month
  • Sept. 16: 24 lbs, 14.4 oz and 31 inches (respiratory tract infection)
  • Sept. 22: 24 lbs, 3.2 oz and 32 inches (ear infection and stomach flu)
Becoming quite a thinker
Sleeping: We're a loving sleeping family!  Bedtime is around 7:30 and he's sleeping until we wake him up for school at 7:00 am.
Eating: Loves to eat.  Currently his favorites are fruit (still), sugar free organic fruit snacks, ground turkey, anything with tomato sauce.
Diapers: Size 4s (990 used) during the day and night.
Clothing: 9-12 month still... really, really tired of them... we're going to have to move into 12-18 months when he needs pants in order for him not to have "high waters."  We've had an unreasonably warm September and October so far, so the shorts are still happily on (along with his sandals).
Favorite Toys: moving on to trucks, trains, and airplanes (he has several smaller ones he likes to carry around) and balls.  He likes to play with puzzles and stacking pretty much anything occupies so much of his time.  Books are still pretty much a constant part of his day.  He REALLY loves playing outside at school!

Pretend City, Take 2

Hannah and Xavier met Andrew and I at Pretend City in Irvine on September 8th.  Originally we were supposed to have several other Bumpies join us, but between plans changing and illness, it was just the four of us. Andrew quickly remembered how much he liked the farm.  He picked tomatoes, strawberries, and dug in the "dirt."
I actually let him play in the beach this time.  He almost immediately started throwing sand on himself (like he does with water) and thought it was the best thing on the planet.

We found a very cool room that Tawni and I had missed.  The "theatre" had a bunch of jumping/climbing tools.  Xavier showed Andrew how it was done!

 Being a firefighter!
 Using a screwdriver!
driving the fancy car
Xavier was back into the sand playing with the big trucks.

In the dentist office, Xavier played with the wooden blocks and Andrew excitedly cleaning the giant teeth.
And, of course, both of their favorite parts was the Marina!  Andrew was pretty quick to splash all over, including Xavier who wasn't quite ready to get wet.
See the dripping water off his head?!?  Yep, that was all him!
He found a little ledge that he could stand on to make huge splashes!
Xavier totally got into it too!
We tried to go play in the house afterwards, but both boys desperately needed a nap.  I couldn't help but share their "sweat stain" water marks from playing so much in the Marina.
I'm starting to think that I probably should have bought the year membership--Andrew loves it and I do too!

Mowing

September 8, 2012
The weekend after camping (second week of school), I went out to my parents for Saturday.  I was sick with the September cold that I get every year and ready for a bit of a break.  Grandma and Grandpa played with Andrew for a few hours while I did laundry and laid on the couch.  Andrew went swimming with Grandpa and mowed with both of them.  He remembered the mower and what it was supposed to do right away.

Yes, Grandpa has a big boot on still.  He found out a few days before this that there was actually a broken bone in his ankle.

Labor Day Camping Trip with Friends

For Labor Day weekend, we joined the Davis, Webster, and Newmeyer families for a camping trip.  I had started school the week before, so I did very little planning and pretty much just showed up exhausted with a scratchy voice.  They arrived on Friday night, but we waited until Saturday morning to make the trek down to San Diego's Sweetwater County Park.

The weekend happened to be hotter than hot, so we were all pretty desperate for shade.  After hanging out for awhile, we drove into Lakeside (20 minutes away) to borrow the Buxton's pop-up and stop by Grandma Kay's for a short visit.  The drive gave Andrew time to take a good nap, but I forgot to take a single picture.  Both Tawni and Racheal took pictures are wrote great blogs about the trip back a month ago when we went (seriously, school consumes everything about my life).
Photos starting on Sunday morning :)
Andrew and Elijiah found many interesting rocks to throw at each other!
Just chilling in the big chair before it got too hot!
We had two sites, one for hanging out and eating and one for all our tents (we are light yellow on the left, Davis' are red, and Websters and orange).
 Mommy and Andrew playing!
Dave and I took Reese, Jordan, and Andrew for a walk on the grass (seriously, if your site was one of the ones that backed up to this grassy park, this campground would be perfect in every way).  Jordan and Andrew had a lot of fun running after each other; Jordan loves Andrew, but she quickly decided that Reese was even better than Andrew.

The other perk of this camp ground is the water splash park.  It's $3 a kiddo unless you're camping and then it's free.  It opens at 10 am and we were there and ready (it was already 91 degrees at that point).  Andrew immediately got wet and started playing in the water.
 Taylor and Nate
Andrew yelling at Sam as he attempts to spray him (Sam just got Andrew over and over again).
"Come on Dad, look at how cool this rainbow sprayer is!"
"I'm going to give you a hug and get you all wet Mommy."
Right next to the water park it a play structure.  Most of the kids spent more time here than in the water.  Sammy flew down the yellow slide (wet swim trucks will do that to you).
 Elijiah
Back at camp, the little boys (Andrew, Nate, and Elijiah) spent a great amount of time watching Sophie (5 months old).  It was pretty funny.
We tried to take a nap in the hot tent, but instead we just had Andrew steal the camera to take pictures of his own feet.  We ended up strapping him into his car seat for a drive/nap.  I slept in the backseat too :)
After everyone took naps (and drove around Bonita to make it happen), we hung out with snacks under the pop-up (seriously, we would have died without it).
Racheal and Elijiah
 Tawni and Nate
Matt with Sophie and Dave with Andrew
 Baby Sophie
This picture makes me laugh.  Nate was on my lap first, playing and drinking with his squirt gun, but when Andrew saw that, he had to join us too.  Nate wasn't too happy to share.  His dirty looks captures it :)
Feeding eight adults, six kids, and a baby at one time was a challenge.  Many props to Dave for cooking all the hamburgers and hot dogs on the fire.  Tawni and I usually prepared all the food inside the bug tent while Racheal watched all the kids outside.  We found another amazing use for our clip on high chair--it kept Andrew in one place!
The rock base on our campsite wasn't the best for the little kids, so there was a lot of handholding.  Andrew face planted into the rocks several times, but thankfully we only had one small injury/scratch/bruise on his forehead.
On Sunday night, we went to watch the bird lady show off her predator birds.
Jordan and Taylor watched on Justin's back
Sam (in blue) and Andrew (on my lap) were very interested in the white barn owl as it hung up side down and flapped his wings.
Sleeping at night wasn't as bad as I was expecting.  Our air mattress pretty much fills out entire tent, so Andrew slept in between us or on top of me for most of the night.  Dave took this photo Monday morning.
Although we'd planned to be there most of the day on Monday, it was too hot.  We packed up and left the campground by 9 am.  As we packed, Andrew and Reese watched Mickey Mouse clubhouse on the iPad.
I love camping.  Next time, I think we'll go either early summer or later October so that it's cooler and I'm not in the first week of school haze.
